Big Island Elopement & Intimate Wedding Ideas for 2027: A Planning Guide

Couple celebrating their wedding ceremony on a lava-rock coastline on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Big Island, Hawaiʻi · 2027 planning guide

Beach ceremonies, resort weddings, private ranches, Kona venues, dinners and lūʻau celebrations, here’s what I’d consider before choosing your location.

Planning a wedding on the Big Island in 2027? Maybe you want to exchange vows at sunrise, or perhaps you’re thinking about inviting family and having a beautiful dinner afterward.

I’m Sandra, a wedding planner based on the Big Island. My husband Kris is the photographer behind Couple Cups Photography. We plan and photograph intimate celebrations together.

I usually begin by asking how many people are coming, where you’re staying, and what you’d like to do after the ceremony. That helps us find a location that makes sense for the whole day, not just the photographs.

Start with the experience: Five ways to get married on the Big Island

01 · Early and quiet: Sunrise beach elopement

Soft morning light, a small ceremony and the rest of the day to yourselves. You’ll need a realistic schedule for getting ready and driving in the dark, but sunrise can be lovely if you’re an early riser.

Best for: Couples who want something small and relaxed.

02 · Dinner afterward: Sunset on the Kona or Kohala Coast

Plan your vows while there’s still enough light for photographs, then head to dinner. I recommend choosing the restaurant early so the drive doesn’t take over your evening.

Best for: Couples who want a comfortable morning and an evening celebration.

03 · Family and friends: Private garden or ranch wedding

A private event venue may give you more options for chairs, flowers, dinner and guest comfort. The venue contract still determines what’s allowed and who provides each service.

Best for: Intimate weddings with guests or a reception.

04 · Stay together: Resort wedding

If your guests are staying at the same property, a resort can simplify transportation and reception planning. Ask for all fees, minimums and event policies before deciding.

Best for: Couples who value convenience and resort services.

05 · Celebrate afterward: Ceremony and private dinner or lūʻau

Keep the ceremony simple, then invite everyone to a restaurant dinner, private catered evening or separately organized celebration with music and hula.

Best for: Couples who prefer an intimate ceremony and a shared evening.

My first planning question: How many guests are coming, including children? The answer often tells us whether a public shoreline or a private venue is the better place to start.

More than a beach ceremony: Private wedding venues on the Big Island

Venue availability and event policies must be confirmed for your date. These are places to explore, not a guarantee that a particular space or package will be available.

North Kohala ranches

Kahua Ranch has rolling green pastures, wide views and a setting that feels completely different from the beach. Ask what the venue’s coordinator handles, what your outside planner would cover, and whether food-and-beverage minimums or service charges apply.

Puakea Ranch has historic cottages, grounds and an event barn. It may suit couples who want to spend a few days together rather than gather only for the ceremony. Ask about event packages, permitted guest count, minimum stays and what’s included.

Above Kona and waterfront Kailua-Kona

Holualoa Inn offers garden spaces, Kona Coast views and a reception pavilion. Consider it if you like greenery and want to stay near Kona. Ask about the difference between an event and a property buyout, as well as lodging, rentals and outside-vendor policies.

Papa Kona Events & Catering is an oceanfront option near the heart of Kona, with ceremony and reception spaces. Its site describes in-house catering and bar service, plus venue coordination. Ask what that coordination covers, how outside planning fits in, and whether minimums or service charges apply.

Thinking about a vacation rental? Get written permission for an actual wedding or event before paying. A lovely house with a lawn is not automatically a permitted venue. Check the guest limit, parking, noise rules, vendor access, restrooms and rain plan.

A little more convenience: Resort wedding locations to consider

Resorts can be practical when your guests are already staying nearby. Each property has its own coordination services, event requirements and pricing, so compare complete estimates, not just the ceremony location.

  • Mauna Lani, Auberge Collection: Explore oceanfront and lawn settings, including Kilohana Beach and Milo Tree Lawn. For a smaller group, ask about CanoeHouse private dining; the current page describes a Sunset Deck for 10–35 guests and a separate beachfront option. Confirm current arrangements and costs directly.

  • Fairmont Orchid: Ask about Coconut Grove and the resort’s garden and reception options, and how ceremony, photography and dinner might work together on the property.

  • Mauna Kea Beach Hotel: Explore its ocean-view event spaces, including the Third Tee. Request availability, outdoor-event options and complete venue pricing for your group.

Make the vows the priority: Planning the ceremony and photographs

When you book one hour of photography, the ceremony and portraits share that time. Kris and I plan the start around the light and the moments you want photographed.

We also think through wind, guest access, where everyone will stand and the distance between the ceremony and portrait locations. Those details may seem small, but they can make the day feel much easier. If you are comparing shorelines, our Kona beach elopement guide covers guest comfort and location permissions in more detail.

Hawaiian ceremony elements

If you’re interested in a Hawaiian blessing, lei exchange or pū (conch shell), talk with your officiant about what’s appropriate and what each element means. Not every wedding needs the same traditions. We can help you explore options with local officiants.

A practical dress note: A long dress will meet the sand, so allow a little help with the train.

What happens after the vows? Private dinners, receptions and lūʻau ideas

Dinner can be the best part of a small wedding. I like to plan the ceremony and evening together so nobody has a long or complicated drive between them.

  • Restaurant dinner: Often simpler than renting a separate venue and arranging catering from scratch. Ask Merriman’s Waimea about a private event or buyout.

  • Resort private dining: CanoeHouse at Mauna Lani lists private and semi-private dining arrangements. Confirm guest capacities, menus, service charges and minimums directly.

  • Private lūʻau: An organized private event can include food, music and hula. A private lūʻau is different from buying tickets to a regular resort show; it needs its own venue and arrangements.

If you want a reception with a private chef, cocktail hour, music, a dance floor and a full dinner setup, we can discuss coordinating vendors and building a comfortable timeline. We also offer full wedding and reception planning for couples who want support beyond the ceremony; what’s included is outlined in a custom proposal.

Something I want every couple to know: How to choose wedding vendors you can trust

AI makes it easier to create attractive websites and marketing. That can be useful, but a beautiful website alone doesn’t prove who will arrive on your wedding day. Get to know the actual people behind the business before paying a retainer.

  • Look beyond the star rating. Read reviews for specific details about real weddings, communication and delivery. Check when reviews were posted and whether the business has a consistent history.

  • Check Instagram history. Look for real weddings over time, vendor tags, recognizable work and an account that matches the website.

  • Ask for full photo galleries. Don’t judge a photographer by their best ten photographs. Ask to see a complete wedding or two, shared with permission, so you can evaluate ceremony coverage, family portraits and tricky lighting.

  • Ask who’s actually doing the work. How long have they worked in weddings? Who will photograph or coordinate yours? What happens if they’re unavailable? Read the contract and ask about delivery times.

  • Talk with vendors you already trust. Ask your resort, officiant or florist whether they’ve worked with the person you’re considering.

  • Have a real conversation. Arrange a phone or video call. Ask about the location, permissions, timeline, payment schedule and what’s included. You should feel comfortable knowing who you’re hiring.

My recommendation: a professional website is a good first impression, not the final decision.

Making a realistic plan: How much does a Big Island elopement cost in 2027?

It depends on guest count, venue, flowers, officiant, photography and whether you’re having dinner or a full reception. These are our currently published starting prices; 2027 pricing must be confirmed in a custom quote.

Beach Elopement: From $1,950

Includes planning and coordination, one hour of photography, 50 included images, planning guidance, vendor recommendations and applicable permit assistance. It’s for a small ceremony, subject to the chosen location’s rules. An officiant, flowers and other items may cost extra.

Intimate Wedding: From $2,950

Includes planning and coordination, 1.5 hours of photography, 75 included images, a wedding timeline, vendor recommendations and applicable permit assistance. It’s for groups of up to 30 where the venue permits it. Reception and venue costs are separate unless your quote says otherwise.

For a private venue, resort dinner or full reception, ask about catering, drinks, staffing, rentals, transport, taxes and service fees. Those costs can be substantially more than the ceremony itself. See our elopement packages and Big Island wedding budget guide as you start comparing options.

The practical details: Permits, marriage licenses and weather

Hawaiʻi marriage license

Apply online, then meet together in person with an authorized Hawaiʻi marriage license agent before the ceremony. As of October 2026, the total fee is $65, and the license is valid for 30 days after issuance. Confirm the Hawaiʻi Department of Health’s current instructions before you travel.

Permits for beach weddings

Public shoreline access does not automatically mean a wedding ceremony or commercial photography is permitted. Rules depend on the managing authority, exact site and setup.

The State DLNR Wiki Permits information applies to certain commercial activities on unencumbered State shorelines. The Hawaiʻi Film Office wedding photography guidance explains that photography and the ceremony may require separate approvals, depending on the location. Verify the rules for your chosen place before booking.

Punaluʻu update · October 2026: Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park closed after the County lease ended in August 2026. A tentative purchase agreement has been announced, but future event access remains uncertain. Don’t plan a ceremony there based on old wedding photos; verify current access and written permission first.

Have a rain plan

Rain and wind vary across the island. At a private venue, ask about covered spaces. For a beach ceremony, discuss an alternative that is legally available for your event and workable for your vendors.

Planning questions: Big Island weddings in 2027

Can we get married on a public beach?
Possibly, but permissions depend on the exact shoreline, land manager, ceremony and photography setup. Check before choosing a date or paying a vendor.

How many guests can attend a beach elopement?
There isn’t one guest limit that applies to every beach. The site’s rules and available space determine what works.

Can we have a small wedding with 30 guests?
Yes, if your chosen venue allows that number. We plan intimate weddings of up to 30, but not every beach or venue can accommodate every group.

Can we have the ceremony and reception in one place?
Some private venues and resorts offer spaces for both. Ask about the layout, event policies, catering and complete costs.

What private wedding venue should we consider near Kona?
Holualoa Inn and Papa Kona are two options to explore. Compare the setting, guest arrangements, event services and current terms for your date. Papa Kona Wedding gallery

Can we get married at an Airbnb or vacation rental?
Only if the owner and applicable property rules permit an actual event. Get written approval and confirm guest limits, parking, noise, restrooms and vendor access.

Can we arrange a private lūʻau?
Potentially, but a private event needs its own venue and arrangements. It isn’t the same as attending a regularly scheduled resort show.

Where can we have dinner for 10 to 30 guests?
Ask restaurants and resorts directly about private or semi-private arrangements. CanoeHouse currently lists a 10–35-guest Sunset Deck; confirm availability, menus and terms.

Do your package prices include flowers and an officiant?
Our packages includes ceremony planning + photography package.

What is included in the $2,950 Intimate Wedding package?
This package includes ceremony planning and coordination, 1.5 hours of photography, 75 images, a wedding timeline, vendor recommendations and applicable permit assistance. Venue and reception planning costs are separate unless your quote says otherwise.

How early should we book for 2027?
Start as soon as you have a date range and general plan, especially if you want a specific venue. Availability and permissions need to be confirmed for your chosen date.

Do we have to be Hawaiʻi residents to marry here?
No. The Department of Health says there are no state residency or U.S. citizenship requirements. Check its current license process before applying.

What happens if it rains?
Your options depend on the location and its rules. Ask private venues about covered areas and make a realistic, permitted backup plan for an outdoor ceremony.

Can you coordinate our reception if a venue has its own coordinator?
We can discuss how our planning or coordination would work alongside the venue’s role. Confirm responsibilities with both teams before booking.

Is sunrise or sunset better for photography?
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your preferred experience, location, light and schedule.

How can I check whether a wedding business is legitimate?
Look for consistent work and reviews, request clear contract terms, and speak directly with the person who will provide the service. Read our Google reviews.

Should a wedding photographer show full galleries?
Yes. A complete gallery can help you assess coverage across a full ceremony and different lighting conditions, not just a few selected images.

How can I tell whether Google reviews are trustworthy?
Look for specific, consistent details over time rather than relying on the star rating alone. You can also ask vendors you trust about their experience working with that business.

Should we be concerned about AI-generated wedding content?
A polished website or image isn’t proof of firsthand experience. Ask who will do the work and request real wedding galleries or examples you can verify.

What should we ask about vendor experience?
Ask who will be there, how they handle your type of event, what happens if they’re unavailable, what’s included and when you can expect delivery.

Can we bring our own planner to Kahua Ranch?
Confirm that directly with the venue and its event-management team. Ask what its coordinator handles and how an outside planner would fit in.
